Urugarth

[ Deutsche Version ]

This way to the guide to Carn Dûm.

Contents

Background

Urugarth (probably “Fortress of the Orcs”) is situated in northern Angmar. It’s a non-scalable level 50 instance, designed for a fellowship of six. It does not need to be “discovered” and can be accessed by the instance finder. There are no raid locks; the instance can be started again after finishing it. To restart it at any point, leave the instance, open another instance, leave that too, then reopen Urugarth.
Urugarth is the training ground for the Witch King’s army, while his own residence is the castle of Carn Dûm.

As far as I know, Urugarth does not appear in Tolkien’s works; it seems to be a creation of the game designers.

Walkthough

For an on-level, well-equipped group, Urugarth is an easy, mostly straightforward instance. Here is a basic walkthrough.

General

The green water is deadly - don’t touch it.

The stealthed Pale-folk Hornblowers summon elite warriors if you don’t defeat them quickly.

Follow the order indicated on the map if you want to do the deed Champions of Urugarth. The deed has three tiers, each of which will only unlock after the previous one has been completed.

1. Sorkrank and Burzfîl

These two guys are for warm-up. AoE the crebain, then take them out.

Goblins in this area, and on the path to Akrûr later on, can drop Marching Orders, Page 14.

2. Dushkâl

Trolls will kick. Have the tank stand with their back to a cliff lest they get kicked into the next enemy group.

The trolls in this area can drop Marching Orders, Page 7.

3. Akrûr

Now make your way over the second bridge to the east, then south. Don’t proceed too fast lest you miss sneaky hornblowers, who will send alarmed elite guards after you or won’t let you go out of fight.

Before engaging Akrûr, search his courtyard for a stealthed hornblower; there is always one. Then lure Akrûr down from his platform, since there is Dread up there.

Once he is defeated, head east into the drake area. It’s best to do this first because it’s a cul-de-sac. (Or, in case you already have the Steel Key and are going for Lagmâs, your shortcut there.)

4. Lhugrien

The drakes here have a fire aura, and Lhugrien additionally inflicts a fire DoT. So fire mitigation or, generally, tactical mitigation is very helpful here.

Lhugrien inflicts 6 dreads, use hope tokens.

On the bridge leading to Lhugrien, you are in for a surprise. Whoo!

Break the eggs for the quest The Drake-queen’s Brood. They respawn after a short time, so everybody can finish the quest. Just check if everyone has finished before leaving the area.

Each time you kill one of the Fire Drake Hatchlings, a grown Fire Drake Warden will swoop down to avenge it. Kill all drakes to lure Lhugrien down from her roost on the tower.
Lhugrien spits fire and kicks. Again, the tank should stand with their back to the cliffs, while the rest of the group stands behind her.

On the cliffside to the east, there is a locked Steel Gate leading to Asht-Shâpol, the domain of the end boss, Lagmâs. You will find the key later on in the instance. Once you have it, you can take this shortcut to go there. The key is permanent.

5. Gríshakrum, Athpukh and Lâmkarn, and the Foul Idols

Return to Akrûr’s room, and this time continue east, then north through the ork area. At the bottom of the ramp, to your left, you will find Gríshakrum for the champions deed, tier 2. You may run into two more named orcs, named Dafrim and Kughûrz, who don’t count for the deed, though.

Next along the path, you will find the South-western Foul Idol. There are five of them in the city, and discovering all of them constitutes another deed. So run up close to them until the deed triggers. (Take care, they inflict 5 Dread.) But there is more you can do. Near every idol, a torch lies on the ground. Kill the guards and have one party member pick up the torch and carry it to the idol to set it aflame.
Now every time you do this, three elite guards from Lagmâs’ court will come running to replace the guards you killed and punish you. It takes them a bit - just wait and they will come. You can also avoid them if you wish, staying clear of their path. The big advantage is that with each burnt idol, there are three fewer guards in Lagmâs’ court that you will have to fight! If you burn them all, the court will be empty save for Morthrâng and his two trolls.
Across the road is the Central Foul Idol. Burn it, then continue north. Immediately before the road bends west, burn the Northern Foul Idol.

Orks in this area can drop Marching Orders, Page 5.

Now head west into the warg area. At the end of the path, you will encounter Athpukh, the Warg-keeper, and Lâmkarn, his mightiest warg. First you can fight only Lâmkarn, while Athpukh will call the wargs in the cages into the battle, one every minute. Once he calls the last one OR once Lâmkarn falls, Athpukh will attack.
Lâmkarn inflicts wounds, otherwise there is nothing special about this fight. Dread is also low.

The stronger wargs can drop Marching Orders, Page 9.

On your way back, a group of two trolls and one uruk will have spawned on the path.

You can drop down from here to an idol on the path near the river below, or return to the town center and pass through the archway to get here.

6. More Foul Idols, and some tentacles

Head back into the city and proceed east through the archway in the center. Don’t cross the bridge yet, instead turn left/north before the bridge. Now you are on a narrow path along the poisonous river that runs through Urugarth. You will probably not be able to avoid the guards coming for you after you burn the remaining idols, but oh well. Go north first and then west to collect a green tentacle for the quest . Do you see the waterfall on the other side of the river? It comes from Carn Dûm, where, with the follow-up quest, you will be sent to destroy the source of the hideous green filth.
Have someone in the group collect the torch nearby, then continue until you find the North-western Foul Idol. Burn it, and on your way back south, kill the guards that come running from Lagmâs’ court.

Then go south along the river until you find the Southern Foul Idol. Burn this too and kill the guards on your way back. Now Lagmâs’ courtyard is clear.

7. Gruglok’s Arena

Return to the bridge, and this time. cross it. Don’t enter the courtyard yet. To gain access to Lagmâs, you need the Steel Key, which is in the possession of Gruglok, the master of the arena. So turn left/north immediately before the gate to Lagmâs’ court, and down the ramp.

Before entering the arena, use buff food (Fear Resistance is helpful, Poison Resistance is better) and a hope token, as there will be 5 Dread and this can become a longish fight. Your healer may run out of power if you don’t protect yourselves. Do a ready check, then enter together. Gruglok will make a little speech, then retreat onto the .... Approach him again to start the fight. The gate will now close behind you.

Now you will face four waves:

  • 2 trolls
  • 2 trolls and 2 Pale-folks
  • 2 trolls and 2 uruk bowmen
  • 2 uruk bowmen, 2 uruk melee, and 2 Pale-folks

Finally, Gruglok will attack you with two Pale-folks. At 50%, he will summon three more of them. He can apply an Aura des Machtworts on himself (+25% melee damage, -10% attack duration. Towards the end of the fight, he will enrage and do 10% more damage.

Gruglok drops the Steel Key. Now you are ready to face Lagmâs. Return there, up the ramp.

8. Morthrâng, Thordragh, and Brîzrip

Don’t enter yet. Buff up and use hope tokens, since there will be 5 Dread. Then watch: Inside the courtyard, Brîzrup patrols on the left side, marching up and down the stairs, while Thordragh does the same on the right side. The moment you enter the courtyard, they will attack, along with Morthrâng. Morthrâng will not call the entire courtyard into battle anymore, but any mobs standing by the idols nearby will aggro by proximity. If you burnt down the Foul Idols, this won’t be an issue, of course.

You can also let a ranged class pull the nearest idol groups separately from the outside when Brîzrup and Thordrang are on the stairs, so you only have to deal with them and Morthrâng.

Another tactic is for a burglar to sneak into the court and mezz Morthrâng so he can’t join the fight immediately, letting you deal with Brîzrum and Thordragh before engaging him.

Whatever way you do it, remember though that the trolls kick. If you fight them outside the court, stand with your back to a wall.

After this fight, clear the idol groups that are still between you and the stairs, then climb up to Asht Shâpol.

9. Lagmâs

You can now unlock the gate to Asht Shâpol. Don’t enter yet; the battle starts the moment you cross the threshold. Use buffs (Fear Resistance) and hope tokens, since there will be 6 Dread.
When you are ready, take care that everybody enters and stays inside. The gate will not close, but the battle will reset after ~20 seconds if you retreat down the ramp. Which is a good thing, for in case things go bad, you can run for it and try again.

Watch out for Lagmâs’ buff Durchbohrende Krallen where he surrounds himself with a flock of birds. He will now reflect 15% of all damage, which can become an issue if your damage is high, especially in combination with the dread. Hold back until the buff expires. It is no corruption and can't be removed.

Lagmâs calls his crebain into battle, one at a time. They have surprisingly high morale (5000+), so watch your healer! They can also buff Lagmâs with +10% ranged damage. If your group does high damage, you can tank them and focus your damage on Lagmâs as the crebain will de-aggro when he is defeated. Otherwise, kill them and then re-focus on Lagmâs.
