Lumul-nar

[ Deutsche Version
]
With this guide, I don’t just want to give quick instruction for the levers - there are already good guides out there for that. But rushing through the instance doesn’t do it justice. The puzzles - like those in Nalâ-dûm aren’t just clever, they are also exceptionally well designed. (I think that whoever made them must be a Myst fan like myself :-)) So I will try to show you how to arrive at the solutions yourself, along with some details that may have escaped you.
One small tip: The instance is very dark. You may want to turn up the gamma value in the options a bit and/or use your lantern (ALT+10). It works at all times of day here.

Access
The entrance to Lumul-nar is on the Zirakzigil, directly north-east of the fallen Balrog of Moria. You don’t have to discover it, though, to access it via the instance finder.
Like Nalâ-dûm, the instance has two versions:
The epic version “A Relic in Lumul-nar” in Vol. II, Book 8, Ch. 3, which is soloable. Your task is to destroy one of the evil relics that Gorothúl has given to the evil creatures of the Water-works and the Mirror-halls.
This version is not replayable via a Reflecting Pool! You can repeat it exactly once by talking to Bróin in the Peaceful Path in the northern part of Durin’s Way. He will send you to Bósi in the Chamber of the Crossroads, who will then direct you to Nalâ-dûm.
If you want to keep the solo version available, don’t hand in the quest after the second run. Cancel it in your quest log, and after a minute it will be available again from Bróin. Just log out and in again.
The group version “The Mirror-halls of Lumul-nar” is designed for a small fellowship, set at level 58 and not scalable. It can be accessed by the Instance Finder.
The Mirror-shards for the deed "The Crystal Mirror Shards” can only be found in this version. There are five shards, which are small specimens of the typical hand-shaped dwarven mirrors of Moria.
More quests are listed under Quests and deeds.

The Trick with the Mirrors
You can solve the mirror puzzles by thinking backwards from the result. Where does the light need to go in the end? Which mirrors can be used for this? There is only one solution in the large cave at the top. Observe and think - you do NOT need to rely on walkthroughs or trial and error. The designer has included little hints to put you on the right track!
[ Top ]
The Entrance – First Mirror Puzzle
At the beginning of the instance, you jump over several ledges into the depths, where you encounter a group of wargs.
Group version: Watch out for the Frost Warg Queen. Fight her alone or remove her corruption, as she can grant powerful healing over time to all nearby Wargs involved in combat.
Now look around: Light falls in from above via several mirrors and can be reflected by another mirror in the room deeper into the mountain. Initially, the light is wasted on a rock wall. Move the lever once to rotate the mirror so that it points to the filthy cave entrance. This will now open, and you can follow the passage to the east.
If the mirror does not reflect light and the passage remains sealed, you may have killed the Wargs too quickly. Give them some time ;–) In this case, you will need to reset the instance (exit, start another instance and exit it again, then restart Lumul-nar).
Here you will learn two things: that the mirrors each have four different positions and that light removes webs that block passages. If you look closely, however, you will see that the web is not destroyed, but only retreats. If you continue to turn the mirror, the web reappears.
Group version: In the passage, you will find the Large Mirror-shard for the deed.
Further east, you will come to the chamber of the first boss, the warg Frost-Tail. He is asleep for now, but his two Frost Warg Queens will attack you as you approach.
Group version: The Queens are elite enemies that attack together. They possess a frost shield, heal themselves, and buff each other with improved defense and attack power. Frost-Tail is an elite master.
Separate the Queens to prevent them from healing and buffing each other. They should fall quickly, because after two minutes, Frost-Tail will join the fight. Then the three wolves will heal and buff each other, and it may be difficult to win the fight.
Solo version: Here the Queens are easy opponents and can be pulled separately. Frost-Tail is a signature mob.
After the battle, you can tackle the first mirror puzzle: six mirrors, three of which can be moved. Here you can apply the basic principle of mirror puzzles mentioned above: think backwards from the result. Which mirror must point to the blocked passage? How can you illuminate it? And then this one? It’s a simple exercise for the more intricate puzzle that awaits you a little later on.
- The only mirror that can reflect light onto the blocked passageway is the one directly in front of it. It cannot be moved, so it can only be illuminated by the northeast mirror.
- The northeast mirror cannot be moved either, so it can only be illuminated by the northwest mirror.
- So the light from the entrance must be directed at the northwest mirror.
- Therefore, turn the entrance mirror three times and the northwest mirror once.
The passage is now open, and you can continue eastward.
In the next room, you will find a mirror that provides light to the next lower level through a hole in the floor and is now already illuminated. Run or jump down the walkways and continue eastward into the main cave.
Group version: Next to the hole, you will find the Cracked Mirror-shard for the deed.
Group version: In the passage leading east, you will encounter the first bats. Don't underestimate them, they can stun and silence you. The Swarming Bats also summon new bats as companions, up to 20 of them! Kill the big guys first.
Solo version: No bats here, you can walk through the passage unmolested.

The Large Cave – Second Mirror Puzzle (1)
You are now standing in a large cave that extends over several levels, both up and down. This is the main hall of the cave. Caution in the group version! The Mervyl lurking above you in the “trees” will pounce on you when you pass underneath them.
Group version: Collect the Minor Mirror-shard for the deed.
Morroval Task-mistresses patrol the hall and the levels below; watch out for them. They have a corruption that increases their damage tenfold after 45 seconds. Here in the hall, you can still avoid them, but it's better to eliminate them so you can look around in peace. Be aware, though, that they will respawn after some time.
Group version: The Task-mistresses summon Morvul-warriors.
Solo version: The Task-mistresses are only signature enemies here and do not summon Morvul-warriors.
Now look around:
- There is only one mirror on this level, which directs the light upwards and cannot be moved.
- In the centre of the cave, there is a hole leading downwards, which is blocked by filth farther down. You will have to direct a light-beam there.
- A second hole is directly north of it.
- In the south, there is a ramp leading downwards, and in the north, a passage leading upwards.
- A small wooden platform in the northeast of the cave, right next to the second hole, might catch your attention.
Stand on the small wooden platform (see the arrow on the map), which is certainly not there by accident.
- Look down and you will see an unlit mirror.
- Look up and you will see another unlit mirror hanging directly above it from the cave ceiling. This is how light can be directed downwards, to the level below you where the filthy web is.
From the small platform, you can jump down to the mirror (or run down the ramp in the south). There are a total of five mirrors on this level. There is also a corridor leading deeper down into the mountain. If you follow it all the way down, the path ends in front of a passageway sealed with filth, through which you can see a single unlit mirror. With that mirror, you could open the passageway and grant you access to the deepest levels of the instance.
So this is your goal: to illuminate the mirror at the very bottom in order to clear the passage. This must be done from the level of the five mirrors, which in turn must be illuminated by the mirror high up under the cave ceiling that you could see from the small platform.
Since there is nothing you can do down here now, head back upstairs. In the north of the large cave, a passage leads up, to the cave ceiling.

Under the Cave Ceiling – Second Mirror Puzzle (2)
Now you are standing high above the large cave hall. Light reaches this level from below, by the only mirror in the hall below, in the east.
There are two ways to go: westward onto a wooden ramp with two mirrors, and southward along a rocky ledge. First, run south along the ledge and through another passageway to the very top. Here is another sealed passageway (red), behind which you can see a mirror. You obviously have to illuminate the sealed opening to remove the filth, so you need to direct the light to this mirror. Note the position of the mirror on the map: It’s a few steps west of the opening and faces one of the mirrors in the north, on the ramp.
Return to the entrance of the ceiling level and now climb the ramp to the west. Here you will find two mirrors, guarded by several morvul and bat enemies. Eliminate them (Swarming Bats first in the group version), then look around and consider how you can direct the light to the mirror in the south, next to the sealed passageway.
The easternmost of the two mirrors on the platform must illuminate the mirror in the south by the sealed passageway, while the westernmost mirror must capture the light from the hanging mirror in the west. Rotate each mirror accordingly (once each). Watch the mirror in the south light up - the path is now clear. Run back up and pass through the passageway.
[ Top ]
For a beautiful overview of the puzzle, first walk a little farther ahead, towards the west. There is a very conspicuous rocky ledge from which you can observe the hall below. (This ledge is certainly not there by chance either :-))
Directly below you is the large webbed hole in the floor, and further north is the open hole. Above it, you can see the hanging mirror under the ceiling. Below it, down in the hole, you can see the mirror to which the light must be directed. You can also see the small wooden platform on which you stood earlier to observe the two mirrors!
The next step is now to direct the light to the hanging mirror in the northeast, above the hole. This can only be done with the eastern mirror, which is mounted under the cave ceiling and can be reached from here via a narrow ramp next to the passage you just opened. The lever hangs down from above. You can see the still unlit northeast mirror from here:
Point the mirror on the ramp at the northeast mirror (turn the lever three times) – and you can watch it light up!
This is now the view from the rocky ledge:
This is now the mirror layout:
Done! Run or jump down to the five mirrors beneath the main cave.
[ Top ]
Below the Cave – Second Mirror Puzzle (3)
You should now be standing below the main level of the cave, by the five mirrors, which you must use to redirect the light to the filthy web on the floor. This should be child's play for you by now.
If you have done everything correctly so far, light is already coming in from above, illuminating the north-east mirror.
Think for a moment about how you can direct the light into the webbed hole.
Think backwards again. Only the western mirror can direct the light to the mirror above the web. It must receive its light from the south-west mirror (which has no lever), which in turn receives it from the south-east mirror, and this in turn from the north-east mirror.
- Turn the northeast mirror once to illuminate the southeast mirror,
- then turn the southeast mirror once to direct the light to the west mirror,
- then turn the west mirror three times to illuminate the mirror above the web.
Done! The web is gone. From here – even better if you jump down one level –, you can already see, deep down, the mirror that you saw before through the sealed passageway. It’s now illuminated, and the opening down there should now be clear.
Now you can walk all the way down the corridors or jump (one floor at a time, to be on the safe side).
[ Top ]
Deeper Down
You arrive at the previously sealed passageway, which is now clear because the mirror, now lit up, is illuminating it. You can now enter the cave (if you didn’t jump directly into it).
Group version: You will now learn a new mechanic for the third mirror puzzle. As soon as you enter, a Task-mistress appears, who contaminates the mirror by summoning a Morvul-defiler. As long as a Morvul-defiler stands next to a mirror, it becomes filthy and dull and cannot reflect light. Take care of the Task-mistress first, then the Defiler. Remove the Defiler's corruption, which reduces all incoming damage by 75%.
Solo version: You don’t encounter any enemies here.
Turn the mirror twice to open the eastern passageway. The web on the western passageway will reappear.
For this reason, if you die from here on, you can’t use the passage leading down because it’s sealed again. Instead, you must jump down through the hole to get to the bottom level again. Just take care: it’s possible to jump all the way down and survive if you land on the mirror, but I would recommend jumping from level to level to be on the safe side.
Head further east.
Group version: In the eastern passage, you find the Broken Mirror-shard for the deed and a reward chest for the first part of the instance.
The path ends here at a ledge. Now it's time for the second part of the instance. Once you jump down, there's no turning back!

The Large Platform - Third Mirror Puzzle
After a few steps, you reach the edge of a tall scaffold from which you can look down. In the middle of a large wooden platform, you see a huge lens illuminated from above.
From here, you can jump directly down to the large platform without dying if you manage to touch any object on your way. Remember you can move mid-air in LotRO! I’d recommend playing it safe and running down the scaffolding, or at least part of it. Be careful in this area, as there are many gaps between the walkways and the platforms. Falling into the abyss means death, which will teleport you back to the beginning of the instance. The mirrors will remain correctly aligned, but you will have to run/jump all the way back down again.
Beneath the lens, there is one more web that needs to be destroyed.
Group version: This is the best spot in the instance to complete the deed Merrevail in Lumul-nar. A Task-mistress patrols clockwise around the platform. She has the same abilities as her sisters farther up. When she passes an empty mirror platform, she summons a Morvul-defiler there to contaminate the mirror. You can exploit this for the Morroval deed by leaving her alone and only killing the Morvul-defilers.
Once the Task-mistress is dead, she won't respawn anymore as she used to in the olden LotRO days (or at least not for a very long time). So stay out of her way while you're still working on the task.
Group version: In the southeast of the platform, you will find the Shattered Mirror-shard for the deed.
Solo version: Next to the web, in the east, stands the Relic of Gorothúl.
Below the web, Ergoth, Mistress of the Merrevail, awaits you. You can see her far below through the meshes of the web, tiny, but deadly.
- Group version: Once you have gathered the Merrevail for your deed and eliminated all saboteurs at the mirrors, you can focus on the puzzle. You must solve the puzzle to destroy the web.
- Solo version: Since December 2015, you no longer need to solve the puzzle. Destroying the relic of Gorothúl is enough to remove the web of filth. Now you can jump straight down to Ergoth.
We will solve the puzzle, of course, at least once :-)
There are ten mirrors on the platform, only four of which – those at the four corners – receive light from outside. It is clear that the lens needs more light, so additional light rays must be directed toward the centre via the other mirrors.
Here, too, it's helpful to think backwards from the result: Which mirrors are in the right position to illuminate the centre? How can you get the light there? Think for yourself before you scroll on!
There are two solutions; mirror images of each other:
This is how Grintin of Peregrin memorises the mirror position:
“The 2 corner mirrors on the east side and the two on the west must direct the light in opposite directions (clockwise and counter-clockwise); if the eastern corners direct clockwise, the western corners are counter. Whichever way they go, that always leaves 3 light beams going to the center from just 1 other mirror and the 4th zig-zags.” - Thanks, Grintin!
I memorise it in this way: Look only at the four corner mirrors. Either the northern pair or the southern pair must face each other; the other of these pairs must be directed at the middle pair. The rest will be evident.
Once you have directed all four light-beams onto the lens, the way down is clear and you can face the Morroval leader Ergoth. If you have aligned the mirrors correctly and the four beams still do not light up properly, there is probably still an unnoticed Morvul-defiler at work. Search the platforms and take him out so that the mirror can reflect light again.

Ergoth
Most importantly: You must jump down the hole to fight Ergoth. There is no other way to reach her, and if you are a ranged class and try to hit her from above, she will kill you. So down with you, and on to fhe final fight!
Ergoth stands on a giant slippery lens (which the game calls a “mirror”), that slows your movement by 50%. She is surrounded by four types of Morvul minions: three melee types and one ranged type. There are three fighters of each type.
Group version: Ergoth is an elite master, who has the following abilities:- She can knock attackers far back – over the edge of the mirror! – and must therefore always be positioned relatively close to the edge, with her on the outside and the tank on the inside.
- She leeches health from your attacks and can reflect 50% of incoming damage.
- She can fear attackers. Remove a fear debuff within 10 seconds, or you will be rooted and silenced for 10 seconds.
- She has a shield that annihilates 50% of all damage.
- She can inflict a wound that deals high damage every 2 seconds for 30 seconds.
- She rises into the air, becomes invulnerable, and calls her minions into battle.
- Her minions can heal her.
- She can inflict up to +10 Dread, so you may want to have Hope items ready.
- She is immune to the movement debuff and thus can’t be kited.
The challenge is to keep at least one helper of each type of minion alive. You don't need to kill any helpers at all – Ergoth will rejoin the fight after a while. However, the ranged attackers heal her, so you may want to defeat two of these. If you plan on killing any minions, mark those that must survive with raid markers.
Once you have defeated Ergoth, a reward chest awaits you, or even two if you have completed the challenge.
Solo version: Here, you only fight Ergoth, who is a signature mob. The minions don’t engage in the battle. Ergoth still kicks, so watch your positioning.
After your victory, you can leave the instance via the rope ladder. But do take a look down from the lens first. Did you know that you are standing high above the Fanged Pit here? You can even see it down there! The Zirakzigil region (where the entrance to Lumul-nar is located, is not north of Durin’s Way (as the map might suggest) but above it. This is a general thing: The vertical layout of Moria is displayed on the map as north-center-south, but that is to be understood as top-middle-bottom. That is how it’s possible that the bottom of the Endless Stair is in the Foundations of Stone, the middle sections can be seen in the Second Hall and in Jazargund, and the top end on the Zirakzigil!

Quests and Deeds
Quests in Lumul-nar
The Small Fellowship Quest “To Befouled Lumul-nar” starts with Haldir in Lothlórien as part of the quest series “The Good Will of the Galadhrim”. The expeditions to Lumul-nar and Nalâ-dûm are actually the idea of Lord Celeborn, who wishes to regain the dwarves’ trust by helping to renew the flow of water in the Water-wheels and restore the mirror system that illuminates the dark mines. As a sign of the goodwill of the Galadhrim, he sends you out to help the dwarves. If you want to take on these tasks, first talk to Haldir in Lothlórien and then to Hrólfur in the Chamber of the Crossroads.
The quest series takes you to Lumul-nar, Nalâ-dûm, the Halls of Craftsmanship, and Dâr Narbugud.
In Lumul-nar, you will find a book in Ergoth's lair that you are to take to Hrólfur.
The following quests start with Frár in the Chamber of the Crossroads:
Small Fellowship Quest “Hall of Mirrors: The Lesser Rings”: Revover some lost jewellery from the foes in Lumul-nar.
Small Fellowship Quest “Hall of Mirrors: Smothering the Sun”: Defeat 10 Merrevail und 15 Bats in Lumul-nar.
Small Fellowship Quest “Hall of Mirrors: The Bane of Illumination”: Defeat the evil presence in Lumul-nar (= Ergoth).
The following quest is bestowed automatically upon entering the group version of the instance:
Small Fellowship Quest “Challenge: Ergoth (Daily)”: Defeat Ergoth without being defeated, leaving one of each type of add alive.
